What is Coco?
Coco is a byproduct of coconut fiber. It was first used in gardening in the West in the 19th century, but fell out of favor because the low-quality coco available at the time degraded when used for short-term growing. Toward the end of the 20th century, it was rediscovered as an organic, environmentally sustainable substrate when new production methods made it possible to create hardier product.
Coco is manufactured using fiber that’s torn from coconut shells. The tiny grains of coir are extracted from the coconut shell and pulverized into a packable growing substrate. First, the coconuts go through the retting process, a curing method that naturally decomposes the husk’s pulp. Traditionally, coconut husks were immersed in water for six months or longer to decompose. Today, the retting process can be completed in a little over a week using modern mechanical techniques. Next, the coconut fiber is removed from the shells by steel combs, in a process known as defibering. Once the fiber is gathered from the husk, it’s then dried, pressed into bricks, discs, coir pots. or bagged as a loose mulch. In this dried, processed state, the coir is ready to sell and use.
The Benefits Of Using Coco
Quick harvests and big yields: When used for drain-to-waste growing, coco gives excellent results. With the right coco nutrients in your water bath, your plants spend less time searching for food and more time growing.
Plenty of room for the root system: Coco offers a rare combination of excellent water retention, reliable drainage and ideal aeration. It gives the roots plenty of room, allowing for optimum air exposure.
pH-neutral value: Coco has a neutral pH range of 5.2–6.8, but you’ll still need nutrient support because this range will fluctuate over time.
Minimizes harmful pathogens and reduces the risk of pests: This medium boasts antifungal properties, which keeps the roots happy. It can repel some pests, meaning your grow is easier to maintain.
Environmentally conscious product: On average, a coconut tree produces 150 coconuts annually. Coco coir uses parts of the fruit that used to go to waste.
Reusable medium: When properly treated, coco coir can be reused. It’s durable, but you need to make sure you prep it correctly for the next growth cycle to guarantee a hearty crop.
Frequently asked questions
What different kind of substrates are there to use for growing?
There are many different substrates and growing methods, which roughly can be classified into 4 groups. CANNA sells different nutrients specifically developed for these different substrates or methods. The four groups are CANNA TERRA (peat based mixtures), CANNA COCO (coco substrates) and for inert substrates CANNA HYDRO (run-to-waste) and CANNA AQUA (for recirculating systems).
What is buffering?
Minimizing extreme variation of pH in a solution.
“I moved onto coco after using soil for a while and i much prefer it”
“The original and the best as far as I am concerned”
“I didnt understand why people used coco before I tried it, now I wouldnt use anything else”
CANNA is the producer of nutrients and growing mediums for the cultivation of fast growing plants. Ever since the founding in the early 90s, all products are scientifically tested first, before putting on the market. But even before the company was established, the founders were already scientifically pioneering with plants. CANNA holds the complete production chain in its own hands. From development to research, via marketing and sales to the unique environmentally friendly production line. CANNA also has its own logistics department and of course a laboratory. Here passionate scientists unravel the secrets of nature. The passion for plants is shown in Canna’s quality products. Years of intensive research precede the market launch of each product. CANNA was awarded first prize for its revolutionary plant products at a prestigious annual expo in Holland for hydroponic and potting mix growers. They are Dutch experts and internationally recognised world wide leader in intelligent plant technologies for cultivating your favourite plants in cocoponics, hydroponics and potting mix. It’s a combination of common sense and uncommon dedication. Since 1979, our founder has searched the planet for active plants and minerals for plant health and well-being. Years of experience, indigenous inspiration and the latest high-tech plant research have culminated in effective formulas that enable and guarantee anyone, including inexperienced growers, to achieve amazing results!
