This 3 part feeding regime has been designed for the professional grower to give a tailored approach to feeding your plant. You can be confident your plant is receiving the correct amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium throughout the lifecycle. The regulated quantities of N, P and K will allow your plants to thrive and produce high yields. Nitrogen exists in things such as amino acids, nucleic acids and chlorophyll. It is also a component of proteins and enzymes. A plant which is deficient in nitrogen will lead to a reduced protein content. Having excessive nitrogen in flower will give very dark coloured leaves and unwanted vegetative growth. Benefits of your plant having the correct amount of nitrogen are that your plant will be strong, healthy and hardy. Your plant will be able to make full use of the carbohydrates it contains and will assist with the manufacture of proteins.
Phosphorus is another one of the essential primary elements required by a plant. It plays a major part in the building of RNA, DNA and ATP. A deficiency in phosphorus will delay the plants’ growth, the plant will not properly reach maturity and other aspects of the plant will be affected such as root development, early fruit drop and a reduction in your overall yield. The main symptom of excessive phosphorus in soil is stunted plant growth. High P interferes with N absorption. Also there may be symptoms of deficiencies of zinc, iron, cobalt or calcium, because the P has locked up these nutrients. Zn deficiency shows as bleaching of plant tissue, Fe deficiency as yellowing between leaf veins. Co is involved in the process by which the plant stem grows, shoot tips elongate, and leaves expand. Ca deficiency produces blossom end rot of tomatoes. Phosphorus inhibits the growth of mycorrhizae which help the plant absorb water and nutrients.
Potassium is one of the three primary nutrients that are essential for proper plant growth and development. It is considered a primary nutrient as plants require larger amounts of potassium (along with nitrogen and phosphorus) than any other nutrient. In plant biology, potassium is responsible for many different functions. Potassium plays a key role in the processes of photosynthesis, the creation of essential plant proteins, and the activation of plant enzymes. In addition, potassium aids in making plants more resistant to cold weather and diseases. Potassium deficiency in plants will generally hinder healthy growth. With severe potassium deficiency, plants can exhibit brown spots, brown veins, yellow edges, or yellowing veins. However, potassium deficiency in plants can be remedied by adding a potassium-based, or potassium-only fertilizer to the soil the affected plants are grown in. Many growers use potassium-rich fertilizer during the flowering or blooming stage of crop growth; these are sometimes referred to as ‘bloom boosters’.
Copper deficiency is rare but can occur on sandy, peaty and chalky soils with their high pH levels. It is required for root formation. Once again it requires professional analysis to confirm and to determine a proper course of action to rectify. Usually the single use of a copper sulphate based fungicide (Bordeaux mixture) will re-stock the soil for as long as you are likely to grow on it. Excess copper is very toxic to plants and to people. In plants it causes reduced growth, yellowing of the foliage, and stunted root development
Iron is needed for chlorophyll production, which is what the green colour in leaves is. Iron deficiency causes yellowing of the leaves and a general lack of vigour. It is fortunately rare but unfortunately hard to both diagnose or determine by laboratory analysis. Generally not something the home grower needs to concern himself with but should you suspect you have it then use sulphate of iron fertilizer on a test patch. Do keep in mind that too much iron is more of a problem as it locks up the potassium and phosphorus in the soil making it unavailable to the plants.
Manganese deficiency is often caused by over liming and is most often found on peaty and sandy soils with a high pH. Symptoms are similar to iron deficiency and can be confirmed by laboratory analysis of the leaf. Susceptible crops include peas and beets. Adding sulphur to the soil, which will increase the acidity (decreasing pH) will solve the problem. The following micro-nutrients are rarely lacking and analysis and remedy are professional jobs. Normal additions of composts and manures will resolve deficiency problems. Excess in the soil will probably be due to industrial contamination.
