Bamboo canes are easy to use, simply drive one end into the media, trying to avoid the main root ball. When it is securely in the soil, use some string/ cable ties/ garden wire to tie the plant to the bamboo. Don’t do it too tightly though, the plant may still need to grow a bit thicker and you don’t want to restrict this.

Vertically growing plants are an attractive feature of many vegetable gardens as well as being an excellent space-saver. Climbing peas and beans (especially runner beans) can be some of the most productive plants you can grow, but providing strong support for these plants is essential. When the seedlings first emerge they may seem small and delicate but by the time the vines have wound their way up to six feet tall with a thick mass of leaves and pods the supporting structure will have to be strong enough to take the weight and sturdy enough to survive winds.
Training naturally climbing vegetables up will support yields rich rewards. By lifting plants off the ground and up towards the sun you will enjoy bigger harvests from a relatively small patch of ground. Climbing vegetables are easy to pick, require less weeding and can be used to create a leafy backdrop or windbreak for your plot.
The very simplest supports are the trusty bamboo canes. Pushed securely into the ground at the base of plants they offer an immediate vertical hook for vining vegetables to grip hold of. At first, you may need to tie in young growth to their supports to encourage them up in the right direction.
Bamboo canes can be used effortlessly and bring simplicity back to your gardening.
“I am very pleased with the pack of canes which arrived the next day.. They will be very useful for all kinds of jobs in the garden.”
“These were just the canes for the job. I’ve used them with connectors to hold back my plants so they don’t fall onto the grass.
They’re cheap, were delivered ahead of schedule and were the correct length. I’m about to order another 50.”
“I was told by my gardener to get these banboo canes, being disabled I could not go to the garden centre, never thought I would find these on a hydroponics website but it just goes to prove you can get anything.“
