A meter to measure the strength of your nutrient solution is one of those really necessary items for enthusiastic hydroponics growers. This budget EC meter is great for the hobbyist as it won’t break the bank!
The ESSENTIALS EC Meter gives direct accurate readings of nutrient solution and is very helpful in mixing nutrient concentrate with water. All readings are automatically temperature compensated. It is easy-to-use as you can just dip the sensor into the test solution – stir and wait. This unit will deliver a stable reading in about 20 seconds. The meter has a minimum lifespan of about 1 to 3 years depending on the rate of sampling. The energy saving feature shuts off the tester when it is not in use. The unit also displays a low battery symbol to warn you before it degrades the accuracy of important readings. It has digital calibration at the push of a button and a lit screen for when under dark foliage. It is water and drops resistant. Even if the tester is accidentally dropped into the water it will remain afloat. This means you are able to retrieve the meter immediately without damaging the electronics.

Definition – What does EC Meter mean?
An EC meter, or electrical conductivity meter, is used in hydroponic gardening to measure the electrical conductivity of nutrient solutions to allow adjustment of nutrients, salts, and other elements for healthier plant growth.
Taking an EC reading allows an indoor gardener to use a mathematical formula to determine the amount of total dissolved solids (TDS) within the solution as parts per million (PPM).
EC meters and pH meters are both used to help growers perfect their nutrient solutions. Some manufacturers make combo meters, which combine the functionality of both types of meters into one kit.
GoneToPot explains the EC Meter
Hydroponic systems use a nutrient-rich solution and growing media to replace soil. However, it’s essential for growers to be able to check the nutrient levels within their solution to ensure healthy plant growth. An EC meter can help here.
An EC meter, or electrical conductivity meter, is simply a device designed to measure the conductivity of a liquid. In this case, it measures the electrical conductivity of the nutrient solution in which plants are being grown.
Base water, such as demineralized water or rainwater, will have an EC reading of 0. As solids are added, they bring ions with them, which are necessary for electrical conductivity within the water. The higher the number of ions in the water, the greater the conductivity will be. Correspondingly, more ions within a set amount of water generally mean a higher nutrient content in terms of dissolved solids.
By measuring the conductivity of a nutrient solution, growers can monitor the number of nutrients (salts) and modify them when needed. This is important when growing different types of crops, as different plants require varying amounts of nutrition. Monitoring the dissolved solids helps ensure the optimum growing environment for the specific plant in question.
Note that when using an EC meter, you must also account for temperature variances in your equation. Warmer and colder temperatures will skew conductivity and must be corrected for.
“’I’ve had one of these EC meters for a couple of months now. It is working perfectly, and comes with a sturdy box to store it in. I’ve been using it for checking my nutrient solution and it is very accurate so far. I recommend this more expensive meter rather than wasting your money on generic cheaper examples that (in my experience) stop working or have their accuracy drift over time.”
“Hard at work and doing a fine job, smashes that cheap dodgy yellow thing I was using…
Easy calibration and works really well.”
“Fish tank aquarium happy fish happy terripin.. Work fine last one of these lasted me nearly three years. Reasonable for the money.“
